We wanted to give you a little introduction to Delaware living and what makes it so enjoyable and desirable. From the beach towns to employment opportunities, this relocation guide will help you make the decision to call Delaware home.

Delaware Lifestyle and Culture

Delaware is a hidden gem when it comes to cultural experiences. From the city streets of Wilmington to the charming suburban neighborhoods, there's something for everyone here. Whether you're into art, music, or theater, you'll find plenty of venues and events to keep you entertained. And if you prefer a quieter lifestyle, the rural areas offer scenic landscapes and a close-knit community that feels like home.

One of the things that makes Delaware special is its rich tapestry of local traditions and festivals. Throughout the year, you can immerse yourself in vibrant celebrations that showcase the state's diverse heritage. From the annual Italian Festival in Wilmington, to the Bellefonte Arts Festival in New Castle County, to the Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival in Milton, to the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival there's always something exciting happening. And just over the state line in Ocean City, Maryland, there are even more things to celebrate, like the Ocean’s Calling festival of music and food, the OC Bike Fest for motorcycle enthusiasts, and the White Marlin Open billfish tournament. These events not only bring people together but also provide an opportunity to learn about different cultures and traditions.

No matter where you choose to settle down in Delaware, you’ll be greeted with open arms by friendly locals who take pride in their communities. The urban areas offer a fast-paced lifestyle with plenty of dining options, shopping centers, and entertainment venues just steps away from your doorstep. In the suburbs, you can enjoy a peaceful neighborhood setting with easy access to amenities.

Living by the beach can be a dream come true, no matter the atmosphere you desire. You might find your special place in the quaint and historic town of Lewes and its beach. If you’re more of a party person, you might prefer the mature nightlife of Rehoboth Beach. For those who love a more relaxed, rock-and-roll setting, head straight to Dewey Beach, where the beach life is the life. And if you are looking for a calm place to enjoy the waves and sand with the family, you want tranquil Fenwick Island.

Of course, the great outdoors is an important part of the Delaware lifestyle—but it’s not just all about the beach. Golf is also a big part of Delaware’s recreation scene. There’s Bayside Resort Golf Club with its Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. A visit to Baywood Greens promises a good time for golfers of all skill levels. And three miles west of Bethany Beach, you’ll discover Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club, touting a more “traditional” golf experience.

Delaware’s Cost of Living

Delaware has about an 11% higher cost of living than the national average, but there are other factors that temper this greatly. For one, the minimum wage is $4 more than the Federal Minimum Wage and its neighboring state of Pennsylvania. Delaware is also ranked #16 in the country for “overall healthcare access and affordability.”

One more significant advantage that Delaware provides is its tax advantages and financial incentives for residents. These benefits can be especially enticing for those looking to maximize their income and save money. The state's low property taxes and absence of sales tax help alleviate the burden on homeowners and shoppers alike.

Living in Delaware means you’re paid more for your hard work, you save on your property tax, and you never pay sales tax (a benefit people travel from out of state to enjoy for the day). Delaware’s cost of living is a balancing act, but you are rewarded many times over for accepting the challenge.

Delaware’s Housing Market

Delaware's housing market is brimming with opportunities for out-of-state buyers. With a diverse range of options to choose from, it's no wonder that many people make Delaware their new home. Whether you're looking for a quiet suburban neighborhood or a bustling city vibe, there's something for everyone here. And if you're in the market for sun and sand, be sure to check out our "Best Beach Towns in Delaware " piece for some great options.

Wilmington, Newark, and Dover are just a few of the popular “big cities” worth exploring in Delaware. Each location offers its own unique charm and amenities. From vibrant downtown areas filled with shops and restaurants to peaceful residential neighborhoods perfect for raising a family, these cities have it all. Plus, with easy access to major highways and transportation hubs, commuting and traveling around the state is a breeze.

If you've been dreaming of owning a home near the coast, look no further than Delaware's beach towns (see our Best Neighborhoods in Sussex County section below). These picturesque communities offer not only stunning ocean views but also a laid-back lifestyle that can't be beat. And when you’re ready to buy a new home from DRB Homes[2] , we can provide a list of our approved lenders. These lenders understand the DRB experience, can help you navigate the process, and ensure you’re getting the most competitive rates possible.

Delaware’s Employment Opportunities

Delaware offers a diverse range of industries and job opportunities, including technology, healthcare, finance, and manufacturing. The state is known for its strong presence in the chemical industry, and its banking sector has seen significant growth in recent years for those pursuing a career in finance.

Some of the largest companies in the state include JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, ChristianaCare Health System, and Amazon. These companies not only provide stable employment but also offer great benefits and room for advancement. In addition to these major players, Delaware's growing sectors such as renewable energy, biotechnology, and cybersecurity are creating exciting new opportunities for job seekers. The medical industry is also big in Delaware, with two major employers being Bayhealth and Beebe Healthcare.

For those actively seeking employment in Delaware, there are plenty of resources available to help navigate the job market. Websites like Delaware JobLink provide access to thousands of job listings across various industries. Networking groups such as Network Delaware and Young Professionals of Delaware offer valuable connections and support for individuals looking to expand their professional network.

Delaware Education

Delaware offers a wide range of educational opportunities for students. Whether you're looking for a traditional classroom setting or an alternative approach, Delaware has options for every type of learner.

Taking pride in its commitment to education and Delaware continually strives to improve its education system to provide the best possible learning environment for students. Parents in Delaware can take advantage of various programs to make informed decisions about their child's education, from early learning resources to those for school-aged children.

And when it’s time for higher education, there are great options in state, including the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, and Delaware Technical Community College. You don’t have to go far to get a great education in Delaware (especially since the state is so small).

Delaware Transportation and Commuting

Delaware offers a variety of transportation options to help you get around the state. If you prefer to drive, Delaware has well-maintained highways that connect its towns and cities. Just like most places in the country, when it comes to commuting in different regions, it's important to plan ahead and be aware of traffic patterns. Weekday traffic and traffic to, from, and around the beaches will change based on the time of day and season.

Public transit is available throughout Delaware. DART First State is a statewide network of bus options comprised of 55 bus routes (including seasonal beach bus services). DART First State also offers commuter train service contracted through SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) and Delaware Commute Solutions (a group dedicated to reduce congestion and pollution through services such as ride sharing) on the Wilmington Newark line.

Since so much of Delaware is on the water, one amazing way to get around is the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Come on foot, by bike, or in car, and board the ferry for a scenic, 85-minute trip across the Delaware Bay to iconic Cape May in New Jersey. Because the ferry is so popular, remember to make your reservations in advance!

And if you're flying in or out of Delaware, head to Wilmington Airport for a convenient and travel-friendly airport. No matter where you live or work in Delaware, there is an easy way to get around—and to head out of state for business or pleasure!
