Things to Do (& Make You Want to Move to) Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach, SC, is the largest city in the Grand Strand (the collective name for over 60 miles of beach in Horry and Georgetown Counties) and THE premier beach destination in South Carolina. But, it’s so much more than just sand and surf.

Every year, for example, an estimated 2.8 million rounds of golf are played on over 90 golf courses (and that’s not including the 50+ miniature golf courses).

Shoppers looking for a deal visit over 300 outlet stores, diners eat at over 2,000 full-service restaurants, and everyone enjoys live entertainment at 7 different live theaters.

In short, Myrtle Beach is a vibrant place full of opportunity and adventure—and a marvelous beach destination.

As a preeminent builder with over 30 years of experience behind our team, DRB Homes brings our award-winning excellence to Myrtle Beach. And because we build in Myrtle Beach, we know Myrtle Beach.

With so much to do here, it can be hard to decide what to do first. That’s why we put together this list of things to do (and make you want to move to) Myrtle Beach, SC!

Featured DRB Homes Communities

DRB Homes not only builds new homes, but also new communities. In Myrtle Beach, our new-home communities enhance the coastal lifestyle by putting all the charms of your best beach life within reach. From your new home, you’ll simply be able to travel down the road to reach your favorite fresh seafood restaurant, that local shop that has the decorative mirror that would look perfect over your fireplace, and the warm sand and cool surf of the beach. Here are two of our favorites:

Bluffs at Sun Colony

Bluffs at Sun Colony is DRB Homes first Myrtle Beach community, and will consist of 91 single family homes (with homesites up to 0.24 acres) released in two phases. Living here means you’ll enjoy a serene and private setting, nestled against lush greenery and bordered by scenic golf course views.

Inside Bluffs at Sun Colony, you’ll be greeted with brand-new home designs with a variety of one-story and two-story floorplans. With up to 6 bedrooms, 4 baths, 3-car garages, and 3,200 Sq. Ft., these homes will give you all the spaces and features you’re looking for.

Best of all, this ideal location—just off HWY 9— is only minutes from the best beaches, restaurants, and shopping in the Grand Strand. So, you can enjoy your home near the beach, yet be far enough away to avoid some of the beach bustle.

Chestnut Farms – Coming Soon

Coming in the fall of 2024, Chestnut Farms in Horry County will be our second single family home community near Myrtle Beach. This is a community for those who love exploring, as its convenient location at the intersection of HWY 90 and HWY 22 puts you at a crossroads to adventure.

Not only will you be able to easily reach all the attractions the Grand Strand has to offer, but you'll also enjoy seamless connectivity to major routes for commuting. Of course, you’ll also love staying right at home, where thoughtful layouts and modern features have been designed to enhance your living experience, perfectly complementing your needs and wants.

Beaches and Water Activities

Of course, no list of things to do at Myrtle Beach can start without discussing the actual beach and all the activities available to you on and in the water. And your first adventures will definitely include:

Myrtle Beach State Park

Myrtle Beach State Park is right on the coast just under the more metropolitan section of Myrtle Beach. At the park, you’ll still find a mile of beach, but it’s mostly undeveloped for a more relaxed beach-going experience, including a swimming area with lifeguard. There’s a boardwalk, nature trails, picnic shelters, and a fishing pier (fishing license required). Your kids will love the two playgrounds, and the whole family can get back to nature at the campground (with Wi-Fi, so you don’t have to rough it too much).

Surfside Beach

Travel a little bit further from commercial Myrtle Beach, and you’ll find Surfside Beach: “The Family Beach.” With a fishing pier that dates back over 60 years, Surfside Beach has a reputation as a great place to relax and enjoy the slower pace of seaside life. There are free concerts, a weekly farmers market, and special events like hula & fire shows! Plus, the Surfside Beach is cleaned daily, staffed by lifeguards and police, and is an Autism-friendly travel destination.

Water Sports

As one would expect at a beach, there are many exciting activities to do on, in, over, and under the waves. You can always go swimming, but there’s just so much more. Cut through the water on a jet ski or kayak, conquer the waves on a paddleboard or surf board, or sail above them while parasailing. And if that’s not enough, dive under them with some SCUBA gear and meet barracuda, spy manta rays, and explore sunken ships!

Attractions and Entertainment

Like we’ve said before, as wonderful as the beach is, there’s so much more to Myrtle Beach. Here is just a taste of the entertainment options you can find:

Broadway at the Beach

Broadway at the Beach is a massive entertainment complex that features live entertainment, shopping, restaurants, and more! All in one place (with easy and plentiful parking!), you’ll discover a dino park, carousel, water park, jet boats, theaters, WonderWorks (an “amusement park for the mind”), boutiques, bakeries, distilleries, cafés, burgers, seafood, and everywhere you need to go for an amazing night out at the beach.

Ripley’s Aquarium

Also part of Broadway at the Beach, Ripley’s Aquarium is a destination all by itself. Get ready to take a deep dive below the surf and waves into a world unlike any other. Explore various aquatic realms like Ray Bay, Rio Amazon, Ocean Wonders, and Dangerous Reef where you’ll enjoy a very intimate introduction to a green sea turtle, sawfish, and sharks! Dive shows, educational presentations, and reservation-only experiences (fancy meeting a penguin or sloth?) are even more reasons you’ll never want to leave Ripley’s Aquarium.

SkyWheel Myrtle Beach

When you want a bird’s eye view of Myrtle Beach, you must ride the SkyWheel. As you sit in a comfortable, glass-enclosed, climate-controlled gondola, you’ll be gently lifted 200 feet into the air. “Unforgettable experience” is an overused phrase, but when you’re high above the beach, watching the sun set over the waves, viewing the nightlife of Myrtle Beach wake up, and enjoying it all with up to 5 of your best friends, it truly is an unforgettable experience. You can even get a LandShark Fly and Dine Package which includes 2 SkyWheel tickets and a $25 food voucher at the neighboring LandShark Bar & Grill.

Golfing Paradise

As mentioned in our introduction, Myrtle Beach is a prime location for lovers of golf. Over 90 courses await you spread out all along Myrtle Beach: to awe you, challenge you, and reward you as you conquer them. We wanted to highlight a few of the best (as determined by the pros at Golf Digest).

The Dunes Golf and Beach Club is a semi-private resort that takes the top spot in Golf Digest’s list (and also appears on many other “Top 100 in the Country” lists of other golf publications). It was designed in 1948, by Robert Trent Jones, who is now considered one of the best golf course designers of all time. The Dunes has hosted many PGA and Senior PGA Tours, USGA Championships, and many Women’s, Amateur, National, Collegiate, and State golf events.

Another top course is the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. This public course also appears on many top golf lists, and has since it opened in 1994. Designed by Mike Strantz, Caledonia’s course is full of artistic surprises, including all the mature oak trees throughout. Not only does it make the course feel more like a retreat, but when the tree’s flowers bloom, Caledonia turns into a floral wonderland!

The third golf course we want to highlight is TPC Myrtle Beach. This public course offers PGA Tour-caliber golf and “one of the best practice areas on the Grand Strand.” This is a course where professionals come to practice in the off-season, so you know it’s going to be beautiful and challenging! And after a round, enjoy a meal and drinks at the TPC Grille.

Mini golf is also prominent in Myrtle Beach. With over 30 courses, Myrtle Beach stands proud as the self-described “Mini Golf Capital of the World.” Maybe you’ll battle pirates or challenge dinosaurs or go on a safari: the mini golf themes are almost endless. Best of all, you can find and keep track of your mini golf journey by signing up for a free Myrtle Beach Mini Golf Trail Pass. Track your progress through the area’s many courses, rack up points for all your check-ins, and redeem those points for fun prizes.

Shopping and Local Markets

Shopping is also a great pastime in Myrtle Beach because there are some amazing places to find unique items, local art and artisan-crafted curios, and incredible deals on famous name brands.

One of the first places to stop is The Market Common. This upscale shopping and dining district is full of boutiques, chain stores, bowling, a day spa, and family-friendly events throughout the year—all in a village-like setting. In one trip, you could find a rare action figure, the latest in fashion, some of the best nachos you’ll ever eat, and work together to free yourselves from a jungle-themed escape room.

When you desire a deal, head to either of the Tanger Outlets. Two locations in Myrtle Beach mean you’ll always be close to fashion. Whether your style is more Under Armour, Brooks Brothers, Polo Ralph Lauren, The North Face, or Tommy Hilfiger (to name just a few of the stores), you’ll find exactly what you are searching for—for less. Even if what you’re craving is gourmet fudge, cookies, or chocolates!

Art, craft, and the artisans that create them are important parts of Myrtle Beach culture. There are many events and special places to find all sorts of locally crafted treasures. The Waccamaw Arts & Crafts Guild is an epicenter of Myrtle Beach talent. It hosts monthly meetings (open to all) and many events that connect artists with art lovers, including their Art in the Park held three times per year since 1972!
